Women into Leadership Students Enjoy Cultural Visit to Liverpool

Article written by first-year A Level English Language & Literature, Politics and Sociology student, Rachel Cowie

Last week, our Women into Leadership students explored the educational and cultural aspects of Liverpool as part of the end of year celebration trip.

The Women into Leadership Programme aims to empower today’s generation of women and help them to fulfil their full potential, not only within The Sixth Form, but in later life too. The programme is centred around creating a safe and uplifting environment for the young women at The Sixth Form by combining educational seminars with exciting activities to open the eyes of our students to all the options available to them. Throughout the year, the young women involved in the programme have been given the opportunity to attend luncheons where they can network with successful men and women of all career paths and take part in workshops hosted by field professionals such as finance and economic specialists and motivational speakers, such as Gulnaz Brennen, founder of the She Inspires awards.

To finalise another fantastic year of female empowerment, the students visited Liverpool. The day began with a seminar held by Keiran O’Sullivan, a recruitment manager at the University. Throughout the seminar Keiran explained the differences between the types of universities and what they have to offer, how courses will differ between universities and touched on his experience of studying abroad.

The group then heard from female leader and Professor of Ophthalmology, Ashli Warburton, who discussed the career paths involved in biomedicine and science. She talked about her journey into teaching and life at the University of Liverpool and her experience in ophthalmology as a woman.

This was followed by a guided tour of the University by current students, where the group visited the Student Guild, engineering buildings and the School of Medicine.

After a break for lunch, the students heard from one of the University ambassadors about university life and what to expect during the transition from sixth from to university. The talk covered accommodation, student life, academic life and navigating finances which was particularly beneficial to our second-year who will soon be taking their next steps in their academic lives.

Our students then concluded the day with a cultural trip to The Walker Art Gallery and The World Museum where they immersed themselves in culture and explored what else Liverpool has to offer.

The students all enjoyed the day with first-year A Level English Literature, History and Sociology student, Salom Sangare saying:

“The best part of the day was learning about the different options at university and especially what I learnt in the seminar regarding how I can structure my years at uni”

It was a fantastic way to end this year’s programme and we can’t wait to continue our work with the young women at the sixth form next year!
