A Level Law students attended a criminal justice workshop at Bolton Coroners’ Court. Her Honour Judge Abigail Hudson, who presides at Bolton Crown Court, gave a fascinating talk about her career as a barrister and judge. This was followed by a very informative question-and-answer session. Students especially enjoyed hearing about the interesting cases she has been involved in over her career.
Ian Maina and King Zuokumor, student ambassadors from Manchester Metropolitan University, provided insights into the realities of studying law at university and shared their career aspirations of becoming solicitors.
Students then took on the roles of lawyers, witnesses, court staff and a judge in an exciting mock trial where the defendant was prosecuted for murder in a knife crime. After an impressive presentation of evidence through examination-in-chief and cross-examination, followed by closing speeches and the judge’s summing up of the evidence, the jury found the defendant not guilty of murder but guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The sentence passed for this horrific crime was nine years imprisonment.
The workshop was an invaluable experience for the A Level Law students, providing them with a deeper understanding of the criminal justice system and inspiring them to pursue careers in law. The students expressed their gratitude to those involved in the workshop. This event has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on all students who attended.
