First-year students at The Sixth Form Bolton had a fascinating week earlier this term exploring the world of work in their work experience placements. The students enjoyed placements in many different sectors both in Bolton and further afield.
First-year A Level History, Law and Politics student, Emily Quinton had a fantastic placement shadowing Sue Priest, Councillor for Smithills Ward with Sue saying:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the week I have spent with Emily. She is a very bright young lady, punctual and extremely flexible. Shadowing a Councillor is not a 9-5 job and she has accompanied me on team meetings in the evenings and also to visit a resident, with their permission, to understand some of the casework that Councillors have as part of their workload… I am really impressed with her and I think she will go far whether in law or politics.”

Adam Omar, a first-year A Level Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics with Honours Programme student really enjoyed his placement at AECOM and said:
“I had a fascinating work placement as AECOM gaining insights into a range of engineering disciplines (covering Structural, Mechanical, Civil, Sustainability and Project Management sectors) and gaining valuable knowledge of each sector's roles and responsibilities. I undertook research projects; I designed efficient solutions to infrastructure problems; and I used multiple CAD software for modelling with and from existing data.”

Three of our students had their placement at Fujitsu where they really impressed their supervisors:

Hamzah Isman-Egal had an amazing time at Bolton at Home. He said:
“My placement was very informative and fun. I learnt lots of new things including how to use power platforms. The most interesting thing I did was to Develop an app with a member of the Bolton at Home IT department.”
Another student had a sought-after placement at Bolton FM. First-year student, Rachel Cowie who hopes to study Media at university. Rachel said:
“It was an amazing opportunity for me to get creative. During my Work Experience, I was able to create and record my own radio show and design my own promo for the show including an Instagram post and TikTok. I loved my placement; it was such an amazing way to end the year and taught me some really vital skills. I also connected with radio presenters who offered me co-host positions for Bolton FM.”

Some students stayed at The Sixth Form and enjoyed finding out about what goes on behind the scenes. Nine media students had their placements in Th Sixth Form’s Marketing department. The Head of Marketing & Admissions was delighted with their work saying:
“The students were set a range of live briefs based on real projects that we are currently working on in the marketing department. The students really threw themselves into each activity and created a wide range for creative and professional video content. A big thank you and well done to them all.”

Everyone at The Sixth Form was delighted with how the week went with Emily Dover, Careers & Employability Advisor, saying:
“Work Experience is an integral part of the Careers Programme at B6, designed to help our students to explore and solidify their career ideas in a real world setting, while developing the essential skills that employers and admissions tutors are looking for. This year, our students demonstrated exceptional initiative, with a record number of A Level students securing high-quality placements. The highlight of the week for me has been receiving some amazing feedback from the employers, with many offers for the student to keep in touch to see if there is a job or apprenticeship available for them at the end of their studies at B6. We are proud that the students have displayed many of our B6 Values during their work experience, displaying dedication by consistently going above and beyond their assigned tasks, showcasing teamwork through effective collaboration with colleagues, demonstrating responsibility by reliably managing their duties, feeling accomplished when they received positive feedback from their employer.”
