A second-year Sixth Form Bolton student was over the moon to find out she’s secured a full scholarship to study nursing at De Montfort University.
Abigail Ngandu moved to the UK from Democratic Republic of the Congo seven years ago as a refugee and was a student at Bolton St Catherine’s Academy. She chose to progress to studying Triple Vocational Health & Social Care at The Sixth Form after attending an open event which she really enjoyed. She’s loved her time at The Sixth Form saying the best thing about it has been the friends she’s made and her hospital work placements where she’s been able to watch surgery take place.
Whilst studying Health & Social Care, Abigail decided she would love to become a nurse and began looking at universities that offered Nursing degrees. When applying for her place at De Montfort University, she also applied for a scholarship and following an in-person interview, she was delighted to hear back from them the next day with an offer of a full scholarship from the university. Abigail said she was “happy, surprised and shocked” to receive the offer as there were only eight places.
All of Abigail’s tutors were really happy for her with her Progress Coach, Bill Blackwood, saying:
“As Abigail’s tutor I am incredibly proud of Abigail she has come over very difficult personal circumstance and excelled in her college work. Abigail has also consistently volunteered her spare time to local charity Families and Babies, who provide new mothers with help with issues such as breastfeeding as well as supporting them with their mental health and wellbeing. Abigail’s resilience, hard work and generosity with her time earned her a place at her first choice of De Montfort University to study nursing. I feel great comfort know that the Abigail will be going into the NHS and in the future I would be more than happy if a member of my family was cared for by Abigail.”
Abigail’s advice to others would be to:
“Strive to achieve what you want to achieve, go for your goals and don’t let people or situations get you down.”
