A first-year student from The Sixth Form Bolton was over the moon to take the world title in kickboxing recently. 16 year-old Freya Thornley, a former St James’s Church of England High School Student, studies A Level Physical Education and Vocational Level 3 Applied Psychology and Applied Science at The Sixth Form.
Freya has taken part in kickboxing for five years and many of her family members are also involved in the sport. She trains at Gouldings Martial Arts in Farnworth where she also teaches children’s and adult’s kickboxing classes. She was selected to take part in an eight-week training camp in Portugal where she won the world title in continuous kickboxing knock-out competition in the 15–17-year-old under 60kg category in Albufeira Stadium.
After completing her studies at The Sixth Form, Freya would like to study Sports Rehabilitation or Physiotherapy at the University of Salford. Freya really enjoys studying at The Sixth Form saying:
“I chose to study at The Sixth Form as it’s close to home and everyone was really welcoming at the open evening. All my teachers are supportive of my kickboxing, and they always ask me how it’s going. I recently took part in a sports massage session on Enrichment Day which was really good as it’s something that I can relate to my interests outside of The Sixth Form.”
Everyone at The Sixth Form is really proud of Freya’s success and how well she balances her kickboxing with her studies with Jill Errington, Senior Leader and Head of Sport & Public Services saying:
We're incredibly proud of Freya and her world title. Her hard work and dedication have truly paid off and she has balanced her training incredibly alongside her studies. We celebrate her success with her and eagerly anticipate the many more achievements she will undoubtedly accomplish in the future!
We look forward to following Freya’s progress and wish her all the best for her future in the sport.
