Earlier this year, we were delighted to welcome BBC Sports Journalist and Editor, Colin Paterson for a presentation on his fascinating career journey and the career opportunities available to young people at the BBC.
Colin spoke to our students about his vast experience in journalism with more than 30 years in Radio, TV and Digital. He’s now responsible for leading a team of over than 40 staff, as well as being responsible for sports output on BBC World Service, 5live, Radios 2, 4 and the local radio network.
The students found it to be an invaluable session. Samuel Featherstone, second-year A Level English Language, Media Studies and Photography student, said:
“As I would like a career in media, I attended a talk led by Colin. I especially liked when he talked about his job and his responsibilities, as it aligned with my interests and passion for media. It was clear he is passionate about his job as he spoke enthusiastically and encouraged us to apply for apprenticeships with the BBC, as the company is diverse and allows you to build skills and meet new people who have similar interests. He also talked about the future of the BBC and his concerns with new technology, as it has become so advanced that it completes jobs that were once done by humans. I particularly found it interesting when he talked about how technology was used at the start of his career, which was vastly different from today. When it came to the end of the talk, he asked us whether we had any questions. With each question, he spoke enthusiastically and in detail. From this talk, it has prompted me to accept my university offer to study Multimedia at Salford, as I am passionate about the media and how they deliver news stories to the public. I would recommend that any new students attend talks in college led by those who work in the media industry, especially if you aspire to one day have a career in the media.”
Second-year A Level English Language, Graphics and Media Studies student, Zahrah Patel said:
“I found the talk on Colin Paterson's career informative and interesting, as he answered a wide variety of questions from networking building to his typical working day. I also appreciated how he visually shared the sports articles which were being written live, as this was quite interesting to understand just how many people participate in this activity. Overall, considering my own career path and future studies into Multimedia Journalism, Colin Paterson shared valuable insights into his career journey and the essential skills required for success.”
Luke Collier, Second-year A Level Film Studies, Media Studies and Sociology with Honours Programme student said:
The Q&A segment where he went on to discuss possible apprenticeships that the BBC offer and the selection process behind it was fascinating. The whole talk was very insightful, and I learnt a huge amount about the industry
Chris Hepworth, Course Leader of Film and Media was really grateful to Colin for coming saying:
We were delighted to welcome the lovely Colin Patterson to B6, Editor of Audio Sports Journalism at the BBC, with a career spanning the last 30 years. He's worked on all the big events - the Olympics, the Men's Football World Cup, Wimbledon, The Ashes and The Ryder Cup - to name but a few, so his expertise and experience of success working for a truly work-class broadcaster was nothing short of brilliant. In particular, the time he took to do an extended Q&A with students, where they were able to interact at length, was a genuine highlight. Thanks, Colin!
