B6 students secure unique opportunity to shadow Crown Court

The B6 Careers Team have set up a Widening Participation Scheme with a Judge at Bolton Crown Court to help to widen access into the legal field. Students who met the Widening Participation criteria were welcomed to apply for the scheme and 15 first year students were selected for the programme. We have now had all three groups of students complete their shadowing, where students were able to speak to a range of professionals including Police Officers, Probation Officers, Court Reporters and Barristers, to find out about the range of careers within the law. They watched court proceedings, witnessing sentencing and a cross examination of the defense, and got to spend time in Judge's chambers to ask him more about his career.

The aim of this scheme is to give students who are at a disadvantage the opportunity to understand more about careers in the competitive field of law and gain an insight in the workings of a Crown Court, and the roles of the differing professionals who work in this field. This scheme allows students to have access to a range of professionals which they would otherwise struggle to achieve through their own networks.

The students found it a really rewarding experience saying:

"I really enjoyed going on this trip as it helped me gain an insight as to what a day in the life at court is like for a barrister and the life of being a judge in a criminal court . This was a very good experience for me and it is a rare opportunity the Sixth Form Bolton was able to offer" - Fatimah Khan, first-year History, Law and Politics student
"The day at the courts was amazing, I loved every minute of it. This has really helped me decide on which area of law I want to pursue my career in as well as allowing me to get an insider on what it is like to be a criminal judge and barrister." - Isabelle Driver-Evans, first year Applied Law, Applied Psychology and Vocational Health & Social Care student
