Earlier this term, Media Studies students from The Sixth Form Bolton enjoyed a fascinating trip to BBC and ITV at Media City. First-year student, Molly Williams gave us her account of the day:
My trip to dock10 at Media City was one of my best experiences at The Sixth Form! The staff were friendly and really informative and I learned a lot about the tv production industry as a whole and how I could potentially enter that area. When walking round dock10, I found all the technology aspects really cool and was impressed with the amount of hard work and effort that is put in. I’ve wanted to work in the media industry for a while and the day opened my eyes to all the job roles available- honestly everything sounds really amazing! The people in the BBC were welcoming and the career talks were interesting: I was able to hear lots ofdifferent perspectives from people who work in the same industry. Getting to meet Nat O’ Leary was incredible and its fascinating to see how working in the BBC can really pay off
For me, the best part of the trip was the part where we went down to dock10 studios, going into the green screen area and getting to handle the technology and cameras used was a great experience. The technology behind it all was so fascinating and the tour guide explained it really well. Another thing I loved about the Dock 10 studios was how many job roles there are in the industry. I was amazed by how many people are needed to produce and keep the studios running. The whole Media City trip was fun and useful for me, but the dock10 studios was one of my favourite parts of the trip due to how much I learned and how much fun I had.
I really enjoyed learning about the different job roles at the BBC, and what each sector entails. When coming into the BBC I was interested in the production sector but was unaware of other sectors such as sport and journalism and the presentations allowed me to gain more knowledge and insight on the subjects.
The experience has enhanced my passion for the media industry-specifically the production sector. I knew that I wanted to apply for a BBC Apprenticeship before going on the trip and I was given tips on how to apply successfully. It's helped me confirm that I want to work in production especially after seeing behind-the-scenes.
To sum up, I had a great time thanks to staff there and it was a truly memorable experience.
Assistant Principal and Teacher of Media Studies, Nicola Sodano, was thrilled with how the day went saying:
“The students gained invaluable work experience from experts, got to walk the cobbles of Coronation Street and were told about every aspect of the production. The group also had the chance to see the preview of the soundstage which hosts, The Voice, X Factor and such. They were able to see the very latest technology in the green studio for match of the day and were able to operate the cameras. Students met industry professionals from many aspects of production, the news, radio and drama. The students did us proud, first to volunteer to read the weather (which isn't easy) and were true professionals all day.”
