Former B6 Student Selected as 2024 Olympics Match Official

A Sixth Form Bolton Alumni member was delighted to find out that she has been selected as a match official for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Emily Carney, a former Mount St Joseph Catholic School student, left The Sixth Form in 2016 with A Levels in Physical Education, Psychology and Law. Whilst studying, Emily played football for the Sixth Form girls’ team and refereed some of the boys’ matches.

Following her A Levels, Emily studied Psychology at The University of Manchester and has been continuing to develop her skills and passion in refereeing alongside her career in Human Resources.

In 2020, Emily was promoted to the FIFA list of officials for the first time making her the youngest ever match official to be promoted to this list. Emily is highly ambitious and has won awards including Female Match Official of the Year in Lancashire 2018, and Young Match Official of the Year in 2017 for the Bolton and Bury League.

In 2020, Emily operated as Assistant Referee in the Women’s FA Community Shield and operated as Reserve Assistant Referee in the Women’s FA Cup Final progressing onto being the Assistant Referee at the FA Women’s Cup Final in 2022.  She is also an assistant referee on the Football League 1 and 2.

Emily said she was:

“humbled and honoured to be selected represent the FA PGMOL in Paris alongside some of the best match officials in the world!”

A huge congratulations to Emily, everyone at The Sixth Form is extremely proud of you and looks forward to following your success.
